Sky Woman, also known as Atahensic or Ataensic, is a prominent figure in the creation myth of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) people. According to legend, Sky Woman descended from the upper world and fell through a hole in the sky, guided by various creatures who helped her land safely on the back of a turtle. Sky Woman then brought life to Earth, shaping it with the soil from the turtle’s back and giving birth to the first humans. She is revered as a benevolent and powerful deity who embodies creation, fertility, and the interconnectedness of all living beings. Sky Woman’s story emphasizes the importance of harmony, balance, and respect for the natural world, teaching valuable lessons about stewardship, cooperation, and the cycle of life.
