Hot Mess
This work was part of the 2022 Nancy Cook Fellowship Award show with seven Mills College photography artist Fellows.
All of the photographic images and animation are mine. The video footage is found, except for the animated spiral which I created.
"It’s not accidental that artist Shelley Carlisle made her exploration of the Sacred Feminine in Italy, where the towering iconography of Greek and Roman mythology is made visible alongside the centuries old—and present day—power of the Catholic Church. In ancient Greek cosmology, Artemis was the goddess of vegetation, wild animals, and the hunt.
Notably favored in rural areas, she was also goddess of chastity and childbirth. The central Artemis of Ephesus animated in Carlisle’s work on view here is from the National Archeological Museum in Naples, and additional images are drawn from churches as far north as Milan to as far south as Sicily. The animation of Artemis invites us into the artist’s exploration of this Greek icon of cultural power and personal inspiration.
In this work Artemis is—perhaps like the artist—coming apart and rebuilding and healing. Moving through a series of personal transitions, Carlisle claims Artemis as an emblem of personal and collective power to overcome and reclaim power through a celebration and reconnection to the Sacred Feminine." ~Dierdra Visser, Curator "On Site" Nancy Cook Fellowship II Show, July - October 2023
Music: Give Me Strength by Over the Rhine

My MFA Thesis Show Installation (2022, Mills College) was a labor of love and exploration into a new realm of my art practice. Much experimentation and testing went into choosing the materials, and how I was going to create an immersive, reflective exhibit that you wouldn’t want to leave. The dichroic film on the walls was especially difficult to source and install but created ripples of color and light around the room from the video projection, creating an eerie and engaging experience.
This honors of the Sacred Feminine, enticing the audience to feel like they are in a womb-like meditative space, ruminating on the destruction of our forests = Sacred Feminine, necessary for survival of life on this planet. I also hope to instill a sense of urgency, empathy, compassion and how we, as a human species, can transition from non-renewable devastation of our natural resources to birthing and re-embracing sustainable and balanced natural resource usage and protection. Materials: dichroic film, installed on the wall with circular transparent wall mounting “tape,” original and found video footage and images projected into corner of wall with a circular cutout of the dichroic film.

Fade to Black
2022. This animated experimental video abstractly narrates how humans “flush resources down the toilet” (specifically trees in this work) while failing to sustainably manage our natural resources. Original and found footage, along with cut out animation. Original sound.
Dryad
2022. Dryad is a word that defines an Oak tree spirit, from ancient Greek mythology. This film explores the dream of a Dryad as she witnesses her own tree-self and beloved forest family threatened and potentially irresponsibly destroyed by humans for short term gain.
Original footage, original and found sound, filmed at Lake Chabot Regional Park in Oakland, CA.
Woman
2021. A “chapter book” film highlights actual events in failed relationships, from a WOMAN’s point of view. Themes of domestic violence and reclaiming one’s power. It is my voice on three of the songs: Fever, The Look of Love and Woman. Found footage & music.
Circo Quirko
2021. Circo Quirko is a tongue-in-cheek satire created with archival mid-century footage and music. This piece re-contextualizes the normative nature of circuses and circus-like shows in the 20th century. Set to the famously fun song “Papa Love Mambo” by Perry Como, I created this film to remind us that child endangerment, abuse of animals and discrimination against women is not cool, yet we can chuckle nervously at the story as it bounces along to the soundtrack.
